What is the Case Competition?
Each year Out on Bay Street partners with an LGBTQ+ focused business or not for profit organization to develop a multidisciplinary business case competition. The competition provides students an opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom to a real life business case in front of a panel of judges from the partner organization, Start Proud, and the corporate sponsor of the case. Not only will you learn about a new business and have something to add to your resume, the winning team will receive a $1000 cash prize.
The Challenge
Teams of three or four will work together to develop a strategic plan that addresses current issues an organization is facing, drawing from a multitude of business areas. The specific case will be released one week prior to the conference. Teams will then present their plans to a panel of judges at the conference.
Benefit
Participants have the opportunity to apply their problem solving skills to help a real organization, compete against students from top schools across Canada, present before a panel of corporate and industry-related judges, network with peers and professionals, and win prizes. The winning team will also receive a cash prize of $1,000.
Registration
Registration for the case competition takes place via the Student Portal. Participants must first register for the Conference, and then sign-up for the Case Competition. If students already have a team of peers they would like to work with, they must note members of their team on the 2017 Case Competition Form. Students are also encouraged to sign-up as individuals, at which point Out on Bay Street will coordinate placement on a team.
What is the Moot Competition?
The Moot competition gives law students the chance to improve their legal research, analysis, and advocacy skills by preparing a case for either the applicant or respondent in a case based on real issues. The competition will include submitting a written factum prior to the conference and arguing your case in front of a panel of judges composed of legal professionals from the sponsoring company at the conference. The case will focus on issues important to the LGBTQ+ community and will be released to teams in mid August.
The Challenge
The goal of the Moot Case is to give law students at all stages in their education a chance to apply what they are learning in class to a real case. This means teams will be responsible for all aspects of preparing the case from research to argument. As an example, last year’s cases focused on specific instances of discrimination LGBTQ+ people have faced in competitive sports.

Participants have the opportunity to apply their legal skills to a real legal problem, compete against top law students from across Canada, present before an esteemed panel of judges, network with peers and professionals, and compete for the chance to win a $1000 prize.
Registration
Registration for the Moot Competition will occur via the student portal. Participants must first register for the conference and then sign up for the moot competition. The Moot Associate will reach out to teams to confirm their interest. In order to promote a diversity of schools represented we reserve the right to limit the number of teams from any one school during the first stage of registration.
